Hamilton Beach Smoothie Smart Blender

As you would expect from the name, The Hamilton Beach Smoothie Smart Blender is all about, well, smoothies. It’s got a lot of power and a couple features which make it stand out from the rest. And if you’re on a budget, it’s pretty cheap too. Here’s my review on the product that I have owned and loved for almost 6 years. I certainly recommend you pick one up, and here’s why.

Features/Settings

The Hamilton Beach Smoothie Smart Blender does a good job of combining simplicity and technology. It doesn’t come with a bunch of unnecessary bells and whistles like the other guys. Instead, the developers focused on making the few features quality features. And I like that mentality. In the end, how many settings do we really need to fix up a smoothie and get out the door, am I right?

The few high-quality features you can expect from this blender include:

  • 5 different blend settings including pulse, HI, MED, LOW, ice crush, and One-Touch Auto Smoothie (read below).
  • One-Touch Auto Smoothie feature. The developers considered the breakdown of smoothies in a blender. First, a 5-second pulsing cycle crushes ice. Next, it switches to a lower-speed setting before bumping things back up to high speed. The result? A lump-free, lusciously smooth smoothie – every time.
  • Ice Sabre™ blades to break your ice cubes down quickly and efficiently.
  • A total of 700 watts of power.
  • 40-ounce Wave~Action® dishwasher-safe glass blending container.
  • Patented pouring spout that gets the smoothie to the cup without spilling on the counter.
  • Storage for cord located within the base.
  • Easy-to-clean touchpad.
  • Guaranteed to blend 8000 smoothies before losing its touch.
  • Comes with a 3-year warranty.

My experience

When I first moved away from home, things were a little hectic. There was so much to pack and things were absolutely everywhere… it didn’t take long before I had no idea of what I had and what I still needed to buy on my way out to the real world. But once I finally unpacked my boxes, I noticed I had a huge problem on my hands.

I hadn’t remembered to get my own blender!

I know, I know. First world problems, right? Although it’s not the biggest problem in the world, I knew it was going to be impossible to live without one. Back home, smoothies were a regular thing for me. I could get all my nutrients in one place by whirling around some fruits and veggies in my mom’s circa 1980’s blender. It was super convenient, and it was one of the biggest reasons I had stayed healthy for so long with school and sports teams and homework and friends to tend to as well.

But now, I was in university. A place where life is much more hectic, blenders were expensive, and I was BROKE. What was a girl to do?

Well, I figured my tiny conundrum could be solved with a little research. And I was right.

Throughout my research I stumbled across the Hamilton Beach Smoothie Smart Blender. Of course, I was first drawn in by the low price (around $60USD), but I also fell in love with the simplicity of it. Oh, and that it was geared towards making smoothies.

I put through my order on Amazon and waited. Quite impatiently. And then it arrived and I opened the box like a crazy person hopped-up on caffeine (which I probably was).

I pulled it out of the Styrofoam peanuts and stared at it, in awe. The glass jar sparkled and the stainless steel shone my ridiculously happy grin back at me. I gave it a quick scrub and jammed it full of fruits, veggies, and ice right away.

I was obviously most excited to try out the One-Touch Auto Smoothie feature. Having used my mom’s vintage blender my whole life, the idea of not having to pulse the ice manually was super exciting. The feature totally lived up to my expectations too. I literally touched a button and watched it work its own magic. In less than a minute, a had a lump-free and nutritious smoothie ready. Considering I had literally shoved this thing FULL to the brim in my excited frenzy, that amazed me.

One thing I did notice when I started blending though is that the thing was LOUD. It sounds like a power drill and when I asked my neighbors, they said they could hear me using it. But now that I live in a town house the loudness of it isn’t so much an issue. Just make sure if you live in an apartment block that you don’t use it in the early hours of the morning or late hours of the evening. I’m sure it would wake up everyone within 100 feet…

And then came time to test out this most fancy patented pour spout. I remember sort of rolling my eyes when I looked at it online. “It’s a freaking spout,” I thought to myself. “How amazing could it really be?” The answer? Just as amazing as they said, if not more. My only issue? It was a little bit harder to get on and off than I hoped. But I guess that just means less chance of spillage, right?

As you can see in the picture, the spout is designed sort of like a toddler’s drink cup. They’re made to be as mess-free as possible for easy clean-up. And the design lived up to expectations. Straight from the blender to my glass – no drips, dribbles, or spills down the sides or on my counter. It was amazing.

As I sipped away at my smoothie (which was delightfully smooth), I checked out the rest of the features the thing had to offer. As stated above, there weren’t many. The developers kept things pretty simple, but obviously with quality in mind. And since I had only dished out a little under 60 bucks, that was awesome.

While checking the rest of it out and sort of flipping through the manual, I noticed the cord compartment at the base. Over the years, it’s been super handy in keeping my kitchen looking spic, span, and put together. Just retract it back in there and you’re good to go.

I also noticed that the blades looked RAZOR sharp. It didn’t really scare me though, because the blending jar was so big that obviously I’d never be able to get my hands down there to injure myself. To this day they’re still just as sharp as when I bought the thing. And even though I’m a huge klutz, still no injury! Just some very nicely crushed ice cubes and frozen fruit over the years.

I finished my smoothie, which meant it was time to clean up. As a university student, I was blessed with a dishwasher. And since the glass blending jar and lid were dishwasher safe, I popped them right in there. Later that day I started the load and they came out sparkling. Easiest clean up one could ask for.

I do have to admit that I was a little skeptical about the manufacturer’s promise that the jar wouldn’t absorb smell or scratch. Again, having used my mother’s beat up blender for so many years I just didn’t believe such a thing was possible. But it’s now years later, and the Hamilton Beach Smoothie Smart Blender has turned me into a believer. This thing is seriously solid. It’s still in the same condition I bought it. And I’m not exaggerating.

To finish up my initial experience, I’ll say this: As a broke university student at the time, I took a lot of comfort in knowing it came with a 3-year warranty and was guaranteed to make 8000 smoothies before the quality sort of went down the drain. That 3 year-warranty would last almost until my graduation, and the guarantee for 8000 smoothies would surely last for a long time afterwards.

Back then, I would make one smoothie a day. Sometimes for breakfast, sometimes for dinner, depending on when things were most hectic. So to last me for the rest of my time in school, it needed to come up with roughly 1,460 smoothies. A couple years after I’ve graduated now, and it’s still going strong. I can expect to get roughly 5,000 more smoothies out of this thing before it might be time to retire it. Again, for $50-60, you just cannot complain.

And especially since smoothies at a juice bar sell for $6-11 these days. That’s just absurd.

Although I am big on smoothies, I have also used this thing to make other stuff. Soups, peanut butter, almond butter, pancake mix, ice cream, pesto, pasta sauce, and of course, a couple cocktails as well. I’ll talk more about some of those recipes below, but this thing really can do it all…

My advice

As with most blenders, you want to add the liquids first before the solids. Or in other words, your milks and waters will go in before your ice and fruit. This just makes it easier for the blender to eat up and work through. It’ll result in a perfect smoothie every time!

And if it ever does stop churning for whatever reason, just turn it off and push the ingredients around with a spoon or spatula. I’ve never had this happen myself as I like my smoothies to be more liquidy than thick, but I have read complaints like this from people online. But usually, manually moving the ingredients around is all it takes.

And with that being said, I would like to mention that you should put at least a cup of liquid in with every recipe. Friends of mine who like thicker smoothies have had a few problems with them not blending properly. Once you throw in a bit more liquid though, it’s always fine. So, if you are the type who likes really, really thick smoothies, this blender probably isn’t for you.

If you wish to cut down on the noise a little bit, I have found that using a mason jar in place of the glass container it comes with works well. That’s what I was forced to do a lot in university to keep from waking my roommates. So I definitely suggest purchasing one to go with it just in case there comes a time you need to blend a little quieter.

As for recipes, since the blending container is made of glass you can blend at any temperature. That’s why I’ve had so much luck with so many different types of recipes. If you’d like to try some of them out, you can head over to the recipes section on this blog or check them out in my eBooks. This blender does wonders for any and all recipes!

After doing a little research online, I also saw that this blender is now cheaper in Walmart than it is on Amazon. So, if you’re looking for the best bang for your buck it may be beneficial to check it out at Walmart first!

Overview

If you didn’t have time to read the full article, here is a summary of my thoughts on the Hamilton Beach Smoothie Smart Blender.

  • Works wonder for a wide variety of recipes
  • Spout makes for easy, no-spill pouring
  • Dishwasher-safe and easy to clean
  • One-Touch Smoothie button makes preparing smoothies a breeze
  • Simple yet high-quality features and settings
  • Very low price (under $60USD)
  • Ice is no match to the blender’s high power (700 watts) and sharp blades
  • Built to last and comes with a 3-year warranty just in case

Cons:

  • Loud with original Wave~Action® blending container (comparable to a power drill or lawn mower… seriously). If you need a quiet blender, you’ll have to buy a separate mason jar attachment.
