The Nutri Bullet NBR-12

The Nutri Bullet NBR-12 blender is a thrifty health nut’s dream. This compact blender has powerful blades that liquify even fibrous ingredients, lots of extras like multiple cups for easy clean-up, and a great price! However, bear in mind that this blender is not great for crushing ice, and tends to leak.

What are the basics?

The Nutri Bullet NBR-12, 12-Piece Hi-Speed Blender and Mixer System has a mouthful of a name, and lots of features to match. You get 12 items when you purchase this set, including a 600-watt motor base, 1 tall cup, 2 short cups, 1 emulsifying blade, 1 flat blade, and 2 lids that snap on to the cups for on-the-go drinks. The two blades all fit into the tall and short cups, so you have three blender jars to work with.

What do I really love?

1) Exceptionally-smooth blending

My favorite thing about the NBR-12 is how well it blends just about any ingredient. This includes fibrous ingredients like greens, flax seeds, and even coffee beans. You get velvety smoothies that are comparable to what you would get with a juicer, except all the pulp is still in there, just smoothed out. As a health nut, that fiber is pure gold to me, because it’s where all the nutrition is. Juicers strain out all the good stuff, leaving just the sugars, so I much prefer a blender like the NBR-12 where I can get the whole fruits and veggies in a silky, drinkable form. This smoothness is thanks to the cyclonic action and blade design on the Nutri Bullet, which liquefies ingredients from the top down for even blending.

2) No wait time between blends

A problem with many blenders is that because there is usually only one big blending jar (or pitcher), you can only blend one kind of smoothie, and then you have to clean the whole thing before moving on to something else. With the multiple cups and blades, the NBR-12 lets you blend one person’s favorite drink in one cup, and then the next person’s in another cup without any cleaning! Up to three people get to customize their order without having to wait around, which is awesome for busy mornings when everyone needs to get out the door, but still need something healthy.

What do I think could be improved?

The main issue with the Nutri Bullet NBR-12 is the motor power. 600 watts is decent, but it isn’t quite enough to consistently crush ice really well. If you wanted a unit for that purpose, you’d need to be looking at 1000+ watts. You could probably get away with adding a cube or two in the NBR-12, but it will wear down the motor faster. Luckily, the NBR-12 seems to do okay with frozen fruit, which I care about more than ice. Bear in mind though, that if you want the blender to last, it’s best to use mostly fresh produce, so the motor doesn’t have to work so hard all the time.

Another problem is that the cups tend to leak a little, which can cause a major issue if liquid leaks into the motorized base. Just be sure to not overfill the blending cup, and always check to see if it’s screwed on tightly.

What’s the clean-up like?

Another bonus to the smaller blending cups is easier clean-up. The cups and blades are all dishwasher-safe, and because they’re smaller, they can go in the top rack. Big pitchers tend to have trouble getting totally clean in the dishwasher, but smaller ones basically wash out like regular cups.

What about the price?

The Nutri Bullet NBR-12 comes as a set, which means more bang for your buck. When it’s on sale, you can get the whole system for less than $100, sometimes even less than $80! You don’t have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a blender, or be rich to drink healthy.

Final thoughts

I really love how compact this blender is, and the multiple blending cups that mean easier clean-up and more options for families. You don’t have to wash out a single pitcher before making a new drink. You just swap in another cup. The Nutri Bullet NBR-12 does best with fresh produce, but it is powerful enough to chop small amounts of nuts and blend frozen fruit. Ice is a bit trickier, because the motor isn’t quite up to par, but for the price, this is a really great blender set (it has 12 pieces total!) that makes silky-smooth drinks.
